I have been told Mesilla was truly started in 1849 when Father Ramon Ortiz began giving people house lots and land to farm. The first church was soon built. I have been told that Cruz Alvarez constructed the original buildings that now make up our home along with his father in law, Mr. Bermudez.
At the inception, they were several separate small adobe buildings. The vigas were riverbank-harvested cottonwoods. They are curved and hewn, not the perfectly machined vigas of today’s homes. The latillas are branches from the same trees, covered with cariso and tulie, the cane break and reeds from the riverbank. Mud was then applied. The floors were dirt. Today, the house is the same, with the exception of a sealed foam roof over the other materials and hardwood and brick floors. The buildings have now been joined together with a zaguan, or covered breezeway...
