The Region
Dona Ana County runs from the Texas border along Interstate 25 north to Elephant Butte Lake. New Mexico’s largest recreation area. White Sands National Monument, the alpine communities of Ruidoso and Cloudcroft are a two hour drive to the east. El Paso Texas is to the south and Silver City and the Gila Wilderness to the Northwest. You can be on a day outing or weekend end getaway with a just short drive. Tucson is three and a half hours to the west and Albuquerque three and a half hours to the north. Neighboring Las Cruces is the county seat with a population of 90,000 and offers two state full service hospitals, numerous specialty clinics and physicians. Numerous restaurants and all major shopping outlets are within walking distance. Las Cruces is home to New Mexico State University and Dona Ana county Community College. The areas major employer in addition to the university is White Sands Missile and Johnson Space center thirty five miles to the east. The area is well known for agriculture as a major non-government industry. Pecans are the key crop followed by chiles, cotton, lettuce and onions. Topographically, the east city is bounded by the majestic Organ Mountains. To the west is the Rio Grande River and west mesa.
